Ski trips

Is Angel Fire a good place to learn to ski?

Yes. Our guide calls Angel Fire a family favorite, and that's especially true for families who drive up from Texas and Oklahoma. Krystina, who founded Ham Heritage, started her own kids skiing at Angel Fire; this past year a half day of runs on just the lower ski hill, riding either the chair or the carpet, had them all hooked and wanting to go again and again. Her estimate is about 2 days on skis before a first-timer starts to feel more comfortable. We manage RC 350, a condo along the resort shuttle route about 0.5 mi from Angel Fire Resort, and Snowmass Lodge, under a mile from the resort and about a 4-minute drive. You can compare them with all eight Angel Fire homes we manage.

How Krystina's kids learned

Those first lessons were private ones. The instructors took breaks suited to the kids' ages, stopping to throw snowballs with them or talk about their favorite movies in between teaching real beginner skills. Krystina also says a full day at the Angel Fire ski school has phenomenal reviews.

What shapes the cost

In Krystina's view, a beginner's budget depends on four things: the ages of the people learning, how many days of lessons you book, whether you go with private lessons or a full ski school, and whether you rent equipment.

Krystina's advice for a first ski trip

She says to have fun and not to stress about getting to the top of the mountain too soon. For a beginner, she ranks safety and skills as most important. She also counts rest, whenever someone needs it. Angel Fire Resort sits at a base elevation of 8,600 feet, and the resort advises visitors coming from lower elevations that they may need time to adjust to the altitude.

How we set up our homes for families learning to ski

Every home we take on has to be one Krystina's family would put their own kids in. Across our homes, guests find cribs and stair gates, and the kitchens are stocked. At Snowmass Lodge we keep two pack-n-plays and baby stair gates, plus a playroom just for kids.

We put one winter rule in every home's house rules: we recommend snow tires and chains, or 4-wheel drive, for anyone traveling in winter. In winter, the lifts usually run from mid-December until late March, and our season-by-season Angel Fire guide covers the summer season and the quieter months.

Getting to the lifts from RC 350

A guest who stayed at RC 350 to ski described "the bus stop where shuttles picked us up" as right outside the parking lot. The same guest said the resort was less than a 3-minute drive.

That image is ours as well; it comes from our RC 350 listing, a unit we manage. The layout and open dates are on the page for the RC 350 condo. Angel Fire Loft is another shuttle-path condo we manage, and it sleeps 5.
