Angel Fire is a family favorite, especially for families driving up from Texas and Oklahoma. It has the small-town feel of a village and the trails of a much bigger resort. When is the best time to come? Year round. Here is what we tell every family before they arrive.
Summer
Trails, lakes, and long evenings
Trails and lifts
Hike the Oesta Vista Trail along the creek and look for wildflowers and wildlife. Ride the chairlift up for the views, and watch the mountain bikers come down if you are not riding yourself.
On the water
Rent paddle boards and canoes at Monte Verde Lake, or bring a rod and fish.

Mountain biking, golf, disc golf, horseback riding, zip lining, whitewater rafting, ATV tours, and pickleball and tennis courts.
Sunday market
The Farmers' Market runs every Sunday in summer. We always stock up on local honey from Taos.

Ski school
Angel Fire Resort was voted the Most Family-Friendly Ski Resort in North America in 2025 (OnTheSnow Visitors' Choice Awards). We started our own kids in ski school at four.
Days off the slopes
Tubing and sledding are a must. Snowmobile tours, too.

Grab s'mores supplies at Lowe's in town and watch the sun set behind the mountains.
Worth the drive
A half-day in Red River
Play at the newly renovated park, walk along the river, and cross the bridge to hike the trails along the treeline. Stop at the Red River Brewery for a burger and fries. The house-made root beer is a requirement. Grab a coffee and browse the shops on Main Street on the way back.

December
Winter lifts usually open mid-December.
January to March
Ski, snowboard, sled, snowmobile, and tubing. The lifts usually close in late March.
May
The summer season opens mid-May: the mountain bike park, the golf course, pickleball and tennis, and the Sunday Farmers' Market. The New Mexico Bull Fiesta comes late in the month.
June
Balloons Over Angel Fire fills the sky against the mountains. It is a memory your kids will not forget.
July
Fourth of July fireworks and the drone show at Eagle Nest Lake.
August and September
Golf, paddle boarding, fishing, and mountain biking at their best.
October
The bike park and golf course close in late October. Get your last day in.
April and November
The quiet in-between months. Fewer crowds and easy booking.
